So I recently posted my annual update of my previous year in beer. I use the Untappd app to track and rate the beers that I have in a year. I have been using Untappd since early April in 2013 and have checked in a total of 3,479 unique beers since then.
When explaining Untappd to my friends, I usually describe it like Goodreads for beer.
You can read the FULL post on my Spirits Untapped blog, but here are a few interesting highlights that I have pulled out.
Unique Beer Check-ins: 829
Unique Countries: 7
Unique Venues: 118
Unique Brewery Beers: 407
Top Style: IPA
Top Venues Included: The Winking Judge (no surprise there, our favourite haunt and it was right downstairs from where I used to live), Arabella Beer Park (our new favourite local beer spot to hang out in the KW area)
I have collected a total of 1,848 badges to date. Badges are just a fun virtual reward for checking in a certain number of a type of beer or a number of beers from a particular brewery or checking in beers on special dates.
Also, in 2017 I rated only two beers with a solid 5 out of 5, and they were:
- Toasted Coconut Chocolate Porter from Caldera Brewing
- Peanut Butter Jelly Time from Catawba Brewing Company
The picture of Liz and I, above, was taken at The Casual Pint (Vista) in Columbia, SC, where we enjoyed the delicious "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" from Catawba.
We also, in the past year, did our very first batch of home-brewed beer, which we called Wicked Dick's Double-Time IPA. It wasn't too bad, especially considering our MacGyver-like techniques, not having had all of the proper equipment for it.
But that, of course, is another story. This one is about beers that were brewed by the professionals and which were consumed and enjoyed.
Year is was, what a beer it was, it was.
